Lessons for Engineers, Past and Future?
YTL Community, 13 February 2004
On the occasion to celebrate “60 Years of Civil Engineering at Kingston” organised by Kingston University’s School of Engineering together with the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, YTL Group managing director Tan Sri (Dr) Francis Yeoh was the guest speaker. Setting aside his prepared text, the Kingston Civil Engineering graduate rose to share his experiences with his peers. He said: "When I think of engineering I think of the civil branch of the profession. This is the one that provides the most concrete evidence – literally and metaphorically of the great triumphs of engineering achievement. The impasse the world seems to have reached poses a stark choice between the destructive and the constructive. Engineering by definition belongs firmly in the latter camp." Later in the evening, a dinner was held at the Kingston Guildhall where Yeoh was the guest of honour. He said, "I am overjoyed to be able to meet many of my former professors, who made an engineer out of me. I am also thrilled to have met many of my mates from the class of ’78.”

Simon Murray: Indiana Jones Sr.
Forbes.com, 15 January 2003
It's a lousy time to be a private-equity investor, especially in the bombed out markets of Asia. One of the few making money is Simon Murray, head of the General Enterprise Management Services (GEMS) in Hong Kong. Murray was a speaker at the Asian Global Leadership Conference (AGLF) in Pangkor Laut.

Pangkor Laut's Spa Village wins Best Resort Spa
YTL Community / Harpers & Queen, 16 December 2002
Harpers & Queen magazine has awarded Pangkor Laut Resort's Spa Village "Harpers & Queen Travel Award 2002 Best Resort Spa". It reviews: "This privately owned island paradise is so wonderful it ought to exist only in the imagination. Pangkor Laut has it all: secluded pearl-white beaches, azure waters, magical sunsets and an unspoilt tropical jungle full of monkeys and macaws. Tucked away in a cove is the Spa Village, a haven of healing and sensuality."

Centre for Anti Terrorism in Malaysia
Datuk Dr Paddy Bowie, 20 November 2002
A hearts and minds campaign is a long and arduous process. There is no quick fix. Just as there was no quick kill of the Taliban. Malaysia is in the war on terrorism for the long haul. The Centre for Anti Terrorism is the process whereby we prepare ourselves for this. The message that is repeatedly heard from this country is the need to address the root cause of terrorism, to remove the source of that burning resentment. The process is already underway. A major Conference was held here but a few days before the anniversary of 911. The Pangkor Retreat brought in the great and the good from around the world, mobilized a Coalition of Minds dedicated to the cause of Peace. Seeking to ensure 911 did not happen again. Ironically within a matter of weeks in the island of Bali—a stretch of water away from this country, we had the Bali bombing. It is a very telling juxtaposition. A Tale of Two Islands—one a haven of peace, the other rendered a hell on earth—constructive engagement versus violence.

Says Yeoh: "What came out of the conference was the cliché that I may not agree with you in your views but I'll defend your right to say it to my last drop of blood. What is wonderful is we sit down afterwards at a concert, we hug each other and become great friends."

On the spiritual aspect of it, Yeoh said, “As I have said before, while I am not ashamed to credit God’s blessings to our company, I shall never use His name in vain.”
