Luciano Pavarotti loves Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, 4 September 2002

Picture: YTL chief, Tan Sri Francis Yeoh personally extends a warm welcome for his close friend at the hotel.

Maestro Luciano Pavarotti, arrived at JW Marriott Hotel Kuala Lumpur, at the invitation of his close friend, Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, MD of YTL Corporation Berhad. The world-renowned tenor is in Malaysia to perform at a special concert at Pangkor Laut Resort, as part of the inaugural Asian Global Leadership Conference for peace.

The conference and concert are especially significant and poignant, being held in remembrance of the tragedy of September 11 one year ago, which required the world to face a new challenge. Leaders from the region and world over will converge at an informal forum, focussed on how, following that event and the subsequent events, we can make this world a safer and better place and how we can benefit from a safer world.

Pavarotti’s performance will celebrate the joy of peace and life that symbolises the Conference theme of renewal. Pavarotti is himself a committed United Nations Ambassador for Peace, and raises funds on behalf of international humanitarian organisations with his annual Pavarotti and Friends concert for war orphans.

He said, “I am particularly happy to be here again on this occasion. The Pangkor Retreat, which has elected World Peace as the aim of its own existence, pursues a cause near to my heart”.

The choice of Malaysia as the location for the conference is a significant move – a reaffirmation of a confidence in the future and a new resolve. Malaysia is a Muslim country that shares the current world spotlight on Islam. It is a Muslim country with a difference, a showcase of a modern, enlightened Islamic regime. Tolerant and peace loving, it is a role model of managing ethnic diversity, the challenge implicit in a globalising world.

We last had the rare privilege of hearing Luciano Pavarotti sing at Pangkor Laut in 1994. It was pure magic, combining as it did, the God given talent of this great tenor with the most idyllic backdrop God and Nature could provide. Mr. Pavarotti himself was the first to bestow on the island the name of Paradise.

On his arrival in Kuala Lumpur, Pavarotti exclaimed, “I love Malaysia! I love Malaysia Airlines! It’s the best!”

The JW Marriott Hotel Kuala Lumpur is owned by YTL.
