Grand opening of Lot 10 Hutong

Kuala Lumpur, December 16, 2009:

The doors to Malaysia’s first ‘Gourmet Heritage Village’ are now officially open. Set to be a one-stop centre for the very best of traditional Malaysian cuisine, Lot 10 Hutong was officiated by Y.Bhg Dato’ Dr. Ong Hong Peng, the Secretary General of Ministry of Tourism. Witnessing the momentous event was Puan Sri Datin Sri Kai Yong, Yeoh, the matriarch of YTL Corporation Berhad and Mr Chua Lam, the renowned Hong Kong celebrity food critic.

Also present were YTL Executive Chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Yeoh Tiong Lay, and Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr.) Francis Yeoh, the managing director of YTL Corporation Berhad.

In his officiating speech, Dato’ Dr. Ong Hong Peng revealed that tourist expenditure in Malaysia in 2008 was around RM49.5 billion. And roughly RM8.7 billion from that figure was spent on food and beverage alone.

“Malaysia’s favourite national pastime has the potential for big business,” he quipped. “And Lot 10 Hutong is aligned with the national objective of cultivating this potential to become the region’s epicentre for Food Tourism.

YTL Corporation has proven to be an exemplary leader in the private sector in initiating successful ventures to celebrate the rich legacies of our country – from beautiful beaches and million-year old rainforests in Pangkor Laut Resort to luxury retail at Starhill Gallery and now, a gourmet heritage village at Lot 10 Hutong to complement Food Tourism in Malaysia,” continued Dato’ Ong.

Another testimony of Lot 10 Hutong’s running success is the support of celebrity food critic and media host, Mr Chua Lam – a culinary and lifestyle figure is noted throughout Hong Kong and China for his love for good humour and even greater love for fine cuisine.

As a token of his endorsement, Chua Lam, who is also renowned for his refined skills with a brush, personally wrote “Lot 10 Hutong” in Chinese Calligraphy that would serve as the brand logo, punctuated with his signature – which was revealed in a wood carved signage at the opening ceremony. 

Puan Sri Datin Seri Kai Yong, Yeoh said in her speech, “…my eldest son, Tan Sri Dato’ Francis Yeoh Sock Ping, spent substantial time and effort visiting operators that offer authentic and delicious food in various localities to promote his [vision]. Finally, he managed to secure the cooperation of over twenty cuisine operators from across Malaysia, many of which are those that I frequented when I was still in school and also of my children’s favourites during their childhood days.”

With their agreement to join Tan Sri Francis Yeoh in Lot 10 Shopping Centre, she explained, customers are now able to experience the very best of authentic traditional cuisine in a pleasant, comfortable and hygienic environment.

Each and every stall is personally hand-picked by Yeoh to ensure that only the ‘best of the best’ in street food that has survived for at least 50 years are featured in Lot 10 Hutong.

As Tan Sri Francis Yeoh wanted to maintain the authenticity of these heritage cuisines, it is insisted that the originality of taste from its ingredients and preparations of the food are maintained at Lot 10 Hutong.

Among the vendors that are featured in Lot 10 Hutong include ‘Kim Lean Kee Hokkien Mee’, a family business that has been passed down through four generations. Charcoal is still used to fry the noodles and “the taste of [our] Hokkien Mee is exactly the same as it was [back then]” says Lee Ching Jing, the current master chef. “That’s because I am still using the same ingredients and the same methods to make the dish.” he adds.

‘Campbell Mini Popiah’ which used to be in Lorong Tiong Nam since the 1970s has also agreed to be housed in Lot 10 Hutong. Its “popiah” or Teochew-style spring rolls have satisfied the palates of its customers for almost 40 years now.

Other familiar names at Lot 10 Hutong are Hor Weng Kee Wanton Mee, Lammeeya, Ipoh Chicken Rice, Kluang Station, Mr Siew Bao, Hon Kee Famous Porridge, Luk Yu Dim Sum, You Tiao and Mor Sang Kor Bak Kut.

“These are the food that our (Yeoh) family has enjoyed over the generations. And best of all, now we do not have to travel all over Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley to enjoy our favourite food. We just come to Lot 10 Hutong!” remarked Puan Sri Kai Yong, Yeoh.

“Each generation will reap what the former generation has sown and it is my joy that we are able to share the good food that we have enjoyed with not only with my children – but also with my grandchildren and their children’s children. With Lot 10 Hutong, we are preserving a cultural and culinary legacy for the appreciation of our future generations which may be forgotten, if neglected.

A very good afternoon to all of you!

Today, we are indeed honored to have our distinguished Secretary-General of Tourism, Dato’ Dr. Ong Hong Peng, who is here to officiate the opening ceremony of this “Lot 10 Hu Tong” Food Center in spite of his hectic schedule. His presence, amidst your good selves, adds more color to this considerable antiquity setting of “Lot 10 Hu Tong”.

On behalf of the members of the Board of Directors, I would like to extend our sincere gratefulness and warmest welcome to Dato’ Dr. Ong Hong Peng for his gracious presence here. We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to internationally-renowned gourmet and well-known writer, Mr Chua Lam, who has taken the trouble to come from afar - to advice and to support us.

“Lot 10 Hu Tong” Food Center on the one hand was founded in response to the call of the Honorarable Minister of Tourism Malaysia, YB Dato’ Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen to actively advance Malaysian food culture as a unique selling point. This is to promote tourism and to attract foreign tourists so that visitors, besides enjoying the tropical sceneries of Malaysia, would also have a chance to experience the unique characteristics of Malaysian cuisines, and to promote prolonged stays as well as offering unforgettable experiences.

On the other hand, based on the principle of “Having New Cuisine Havens to Meet the Palates of New Generations”, we have extended our invitation to cuisine operators across Malaysia to participate in this little world in order to unleash the strength of a group and display the appeal of each to ensure local guests and those from afar would stream in steadily all year round and at the same time offer these guests a feeling of home from home.

As such my eldest son, Tan Sri Dato’ Francis Yeoh Sock Ping, spent substantial time and effort visiting operators offering great food in various localities to promote his concept of “Having New Cuisine Havens to Meet the Palates of New Generations”. Finally he secured cooperation of over twenty cuisine operators from across Malaysia, many of which are those that I frequented when I was at school and also of my children’s favourites during their childhood days. We procured their agreement to bring their authentic and delicious food, which have flourished through two or three generations and renowned in South East Asia, together to Lot 10 Shopping Mall. This will enable customers to experience a one-stop gourmet service as well as to enjoy the food in a pleasant and hygienic environment, and also in comfort. This also opened the various renowned food of our country to better scopes of development and encouraged new options. We are indeed very happy and satisfied with it.

Here, on behalf of the Board of Directors, I would also like to extend my heartiest congratulations and warmest welcome to the participating cuisine operators. I hope you all will make the most of this wonderful environment and provide customers with better food preparations and excellent customer service. I also wish everyone happiness in your work and a prosperous and growing business in this cuisine haven!
