Kuala Lumpur, April 29, 2010: Merely weeks after opening its doors, the National Geographic Store in Lot 10 Shopping Centre has already received its very first international celebrity shopper – Malaysia’s very own Hollywood movie star, Dato’ Michelle Yeoh.

The star of the multiple Academy Award-winning action film ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ was visibly excited as she stepped into the store. Accompanied by the Managing Director of YTL Corporation Berhad, Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Francis Yeoh, Dato’ Michelle browsed the different sections of the store, intently going through the various travel- and exploration-themed items offered there. A frequent globetrotter, the international actress took a keen interest in the various world maps and globes that are showcased in the store.

Dato’ Michelle was also impressed by the eco-friendly design of the whole retail space, a key feature of National Geographic Stores worldwide. The store was built with environmentally sustainable materials and makes full use of daytime natural light. The created environment itself was designed to inspire visitors to be more environmentally conscious, and to take care of this planet we call Home.

The actress, who is personally invested in the environmental cause, expressed great concern over the extinction of indigenous animals and the destruction of their natural habitat.

The star had recently worked on a National Geographic Channel programme entitled ‘Among the Great Apes’, a documentary that was made in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (FINAS). It tells the story of Dato’ Michelle’s first encounter with her adopted baby orangutan, Sen, at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sabah.  Sepilok is world-renowned for its work in rehabilitating orangutan orphans that are rescued from logging sites, plantations, and illegal hunting.

With the chain of retail stores all across the globe, National Geographic aims to engage, educate and inspire its visitors to better understand and appreciate global cultures and natural environments.
