YTL's Pangkor Laut Resort 'Number One in the World'

COVER: Number 1 in the world: Pangkor Laut Resort, Malaysia.
Kuala Lumpur, 15 September 2003

Pangkor Laut Resort has won the ultimate accolade at the Condé Nast Traveller UK Readers’ Travel Awards, taking the ‘Number One in the World’ award, as well as winning the ‘Best Overseas Destination Spa’ category. The resort has also been featured on the cover of the premier travel magazine’s October 2003 issue.

Readers of Condé Nast Traveller UK voted the resort Number One in this year’s Top 100 list of the Readers’ Travel Awards, the sixth annual survey run by the magazine. Nominations were based on what they think are the best that the world of travel has to offer, from hotels and spas to airlines and airports.

Pangkor Laut Resort took the top place over prominent names such as Hotel Cipriani, Venice; Sandy Lane, Barbados; Four Seasons Hotel, New York; Begawan Giri Estate, Bali; the Aman resorts including Amanjena; Amanpuri and Amankila; Four Seasons Resort Maldives; Shangri-La, Singapore; well as Hotel Arts, Barcelona.

In the ‘Best Overseas Destination Spa’ category, Pangkor Laut Resort’s luxurious Spa Village outshone Ananda in the Himalayas, India; Chiva-Som International Health Resort, Thailand; LaSource, Granada; Cal-a-Vie, California; and Clinique La Prairie in Switzerland. . The Spa Village, which opened its doors last year, scored an impressive 85 points and above for all nine categories with the highest rank for its range of treatments.

The magazine describes the resort: “For unadulterated indulgence, there is nowhere else you’d rather be than the private island of Pangkor Laut Resort in Malaysia. Long a favourite, it went straight to the top of the Overseas Destination Spa category this year, its new sensational Spa Village winning it sufficiently high scores to ensure that Pangkor Laut Resort also made the number one spot in our ‘best of the best’ Top 100.”

Condé Nast Traveller UK boasts a circulation of 82,780 copies a month, as certified by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) in August 2003. The magazine is renowned for its stunning photography and independent travel articles, making it the authority in its field and attracting readers who are discerning travellers who enjoy style and quality.

The awards presentation was held on September 9, 2003 in London. Sarah Miller, Editor of Condé Nast Traveller presented both the awards to Dato’ Mark Yeoh, President of YTL Hotels and Properties Sdn Bhd.

Commenting on the awards garnered, Dato’ Mark Yeoh said: “I am absolutely delighted that Pangkor Laut Resort has been presented with these awards, which confirms that this private island hideaway is the ultimate destination for the Condé Nast Traveller UK readers. I thank our good Lord for continuing to perfume us and for His blessings.”

Pangkor Laut Resort is the ideal romantic hideaway and has had the honour of hosting international celebrities such as glamorous honeymooners Joan Collins and husband Percy Gibson. Golfer Nick Faldo and wife Valerie raved about its style and service, whilst world-renowned tenor Luciano Pavarotti declared, “I almost cried when I saw how beautiful God had made this paradise.” Other luminaries who have visited the resort and loved it include former prime minister John Major; leader of the Liberal Democrats Charles Kennedy; Steve Forbes of Forbes magazine; as well as Hollywood actress Jodie Foster.

Condé Nast Traveller UK readers previously voted Pangkor Laut’s Estates as ‘One of the World’s 25 Best Beach Houses 2002’ and the Resort was ranked second in the ‘Best Island in the World 1999’ category. Pangkor Laut Resort is the first Malaysian resort/hotel to be awarded the prestigious Five Star Diamond Award 2002 and 2003 by The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences.

The Resort’s Spa Village has received numerous international accolades, most recently being named one of the “Top Ten Most Luxurious Spas” by Tatler UK, September 2003. It won “Best Resort Spa” at the Harpers & Queen UK Travel Awards 2002.

The Spa Village is a unique retreat that pays tribute to the healing cultures of the region. Malaysia, with its diverse history of people and cultures, and a vast profusion of natural resources, provides the backdrop for health rituals that are amongst the oldest in the world. The abundance of Malay, Chinese, Indian and Thai practices makes this the ideal setting for complete rejuvenation.

Tanjong Jara Resort, another hotel owned and managed by the YTL Group was listed 13th on the Readers’ Travel Awards Overseas Leisure Hotels (Asia) category, together with The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur, which is owned by the YTL Group.
