YTL’s Hipmobile signs partnership with Indonesia's biggest content provider, IMT

Hipmobile, a subsidiary of YTL e-Solutions, a premier Malaysian ICT company, and Indonesia Media Technologies (IMT) signed a partnership today to cross sell mobile content and applications in Malaysia and Indonesia. Hipmobile is focusing on becoming Malaysia's leading wireless content provider and will be offering IMT’s mobile content and applications to Malaysian cellular subscribers. In turn IMT will offer Hipmobile’s award winning ring tones, logos, and MMS through its existing network of partnerships with all Indonesian cellular operators.

“I am pleased to see how IMT and Hipmobile have quickly combined resources to form a strategic alliance that will benefit their customers,” said Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, Executive Chairman of YTL e-Solutions, the parent company of Hipmobile.

Hipmobile specializes in “wireless mobile entertainment” that combines information communications technology with entertainment. In the short time that Hipmobile has been in operations, it has proven to be among the top in what it does best. Hipmobile was named first-runner up in the Nokia Asia Polyphonic Ringtone competition. Apart from creating polyphonic ringing tones, Hipmobile’s creations include other original multimedia content such as downloadable java-games, graphics and animations and award winning dancing phone ring tones which are made available through wireless mobile network providers, content provider partners and their multimedia lifestyle portal, Hipmobile.com interconnected with YTL Community.com.

“We have closely reviewed ringtone and MMS providers throughout the world and have found Hipmobile to be the best,” said Phil Rickard, CEO of IMT, “The 15 million cellular subscribers in Indonesia eagerly await our launch.”

IMT specializes in digital content that is distributed through their Internet portals, Astaga.com and Kafegaul.com and to mobile subscribers through partnership with all of the Indonesian cellular providers. IMT has over 50 different mobile services from fan clubs for top Indonesian bands to IQ tests, to traffic reports.

“A successful business model for digital content on the Internet has eluded many because it lacked one small but extremely important detail, the ability for micro payment,” said Phil Rickard CEO/Founder IMT. “Although I may be willing to pay a few pennies to get an inspiring quote everyday I certainly won’t put my credit card on the Internet to do it. The mobile phone offers a simple and effective way to bill a few pennies for information, services, and entertainment. A few pennies every day times YTL’s 10 million customers is an exciting opportunity.”

Both companies have strong established communities of customers to distribute the new services to. The YTL Group has over 10 million customers worldwide, with over 8 million in Malaysia, and 500,000 as part of the YTL Community Card carrying members. This, combined with IMT’s 5 million Astaga and Kafegaul users, will make for a powerful distribution channel.

In turn, IMT will offer Hipmobile’s award winning ring tones, logos, and MMS through its existing network of partnerships with all Indonesian cellular operators. The key marketing and distribution platform will IMT’s two web portals, Astaga.com and Kafegaul.com, which combine for over 6,000,000 hits per day making them two of the largest web portals in Indonesia. The Indonesian cellular phone market is growing at a rapid pace and is expected to go from its existing 15,000,000 subscribers to over 20,000,000 by 2006.

Mobile market
According to The Yankee Group, it is estimated that by 2006, Asia-Pacific will represent 50 per cent of the global opportunity for wireless Internet, with 411.2 million mobile data subscribers. By the end of 2006, revenues from mobile data services in the region will amount to USD308.1 billion, or almost 30 per cent of all mobile service revenues.
