Fortune ranks Yeoh among Asia's most powerful business personalities

Fortune magazine, 9 August 2004 issue

21 Francis Yeoh
YTL
Malaysia

Yeoh, 50, a flamboyant born-again Christian, knows how to woo hearts, minds and customers. Soon after buying British utility Wessex Water for $1.8 billion in 2002 from Enron, he put the Three Tenors on stage in the historic English spa of Bath to say thanks to his new customers. Combined with its four listed subsidiaries in utilities, cement, land development, and e-business, YTL has a market capitalization of $4.2 billion and is one of Malaysia's most international companies. In nine months ended March 31, YTL generated revenue of $867 million, more than half from outside Malaysia. Yeoh's next big idea? Turning his Kuala Lumpur home base into Southeast Asia's premier arts center. And capturing more power stations to serve Asia's growing energy demand.

Business Times Malaysia, 30 July 2004

YTL Corp Bhd managing director Tan Sri Francis Yeoh made it into Fortune's ranking of Asia's most powerful people in business in 2004.

The top spot goes to Toyota Motor Corp president Fujio Cho of Japan. Sony Corp chairman and group chief executive officer Nobuyuki Idei, also from Japan, was second.

Malaysian Yeoh ranks 21st in the list while Singapore's Temasek Holdings Pte Ltd executive director Ho Ching is at the 18th spot.

Fortune, a US business magazine, said in a statement that this year's Power 25 issue includes two international lists, one for Europe and another for Asia. It said a single list just did not do justice to the increasing influence of business people outside the US.
