For future generations

Tan Sri (Dr) Francis Yeoh, Managing Director of YTL Corp Bhd

The Sun, May 7, 2007

YTL Corp wins†award for†"Best Social Reporting in an Annual Report"†at the†ACCA Malaysia Environmental and Social Reporting Awards 2006.

YTL Corp Bhd's managing director Tan Sri FrancisYeoh likes to think that its CSR initiatives create more awareness in every employee throughout the group of the importance of running the business in a sustainable and socially responsible manner. It is not just about donations, but also about contributing through actions to improving the state of mankind and the world. "It is the least we can do for our nation and future generations," says Yeoh.

YTL has been in business for a long time but has only now started to get serious about embedding CSR into its DNA. What triggered this?

Yeoh: YTL has a long-standing commitment to CSR activities, and it is more accurate to say the group has only recently begun actively and comprehensively reporting on these activities as the board of directors does see the wider value of communicating the group's activities in these areas to all its stakeholders - shareholders, investors, regulatory authorities, employees and the local communities in which it operates.

To illustrate the group's most recent initiatives, YTL organised a Climate Change Week from March 6 to 9 that encompassed the global launch of the book Cut Carbon, Grow Profits: Business Strategies for Managing Climate Change & Sustainability (co-edited by Dr Kenny Tang and Ruth Yeoh, director of investments of YTL Corp); a one -day business conference (Sir Paul Judge of The Judge Business School, Cambridge University, was the conference chairman) and YTL-sponsored free public screenings of the Oscar-winning movie An Inconvenient Truth.

YTLís CSR video was screened at the KL Performance Arts Centre throughout Climate Change Week and YTLís CSR and annual reports 2006 were distributed at the conference.

Explain how you have gone about introducing CSR to the organisation and winning buy-in from staff?

The combined effects of Climate Change Week and pioneering of the CSR report raised much awareness both within and outside the group. Much of the focus was on the effects of climate change and what YTL is doing in terms of mitigating climate change risk through action and encouraging sustainability.

We are also consistently improving all our operations as we understand that the journey towards sustainability is ongoing. We have certainly set targets to achieve, for example, carbon emission reductions in our water and power businesses.

In addition, staffs at all levels are involved in reporting and updating. Accounts reconciliation meetings are held once a month several meetings are also conducted to discuss the involvement of the annual reports during reporting season. Our management perspective is that each employee needs to know the organisation inside out to enable us to report thoroughly and efficiently, and our colleagues are well equipped to do so. As an international conglomerate, we need only speak to our people, such as our environmental engineers, who give us input and suggestions on CSR reporting. We are proactive with our reporting as we believe every one in the organisation has a role to play.

How do you measure the impact of your CSR programmes on the staff and the causes you have picked?

All levels of staff are encouraged to bring causes that they are interested or involved in to the attention of their supervisors as well as board members during leadership sessions and these are assessed by a senior management committee. This process also enables all employees to provide their feedback on the groupís CSR programmes and initiatives.

The geographical diversity of our operations, for example, requires a heightened awareness of the social and economic conditions in the countries in which the group operates. Our presence in Indonesia brought the Aceh tsunami that caused so much devastation in December 2004 much closer to home and the group contributed RM2 million to the Malaysian government's RM12.95 million fund to assist with the relief efforts of the Indonesian government. The group also contributed 5.75 billion rupiah (about RM1.45 million) to the Indonesian Red Cross to assist with its various Humanitarian programmes for Indonesian migrant workers returning home under the amnesty granted by the Malaysian government.

Together with Jawa Power, our associate company in Indonesia, YTL contributed to relief efforts in Indonesia following the earth quake that hit Yogyakarta in May 2006 donating funds to purchase basic necessities, such as rice, baby food, milk, antibiotics, first-aid packages, tents and candles.

Among the charities that we support, the ones that are closest to YTLís heart include Pink Ribbon Deeds [PRIDE], which [promotes campaigns] to increase awareness of breast cancer and raise funds to support survivors of the disease besides improving standards of diagnosis, treatment and care of breast cancer patients in Malaysia and the annual Toys for Tots Christmas charity campaign, which encourages guests and visitors at the group's hotels to donate toys and gifts to benefit underprivileged children.

YTL is an active supporter of these associations and, in addition to donations, we offer the use of our hotels, restaurants and shopping centres to serve as venues for fundraising events for these charities.

Do you think adopting CSR will eventually change the culture or philosophy of the company?

This is an evolving process for the group. As a number of CSR activities have been on our radar for many years, we do not think that further involvement in CSR will change the culture of the company but rather enhance it so that each new initiative only brings more awareness to each employee throughout the group of the importance of running the business in a sustainable and socially responsible manner.

To us, it is not just about donations it is about contributing through our actions to improving the state of mankind and the world around us. It is the least we can do for our nation and future generations.

Does YTL believe that the concept of CSR and doing business is mutually inclusive?

Yes, the group has always subscribed to the principle that its business must be operated in a sustainable manner and, to achieve this goal, the group is dedicated to carrying out its businesses in a responsible manner.

The YTL group is constantly searching for innovative ways to encourage energy saving and to minimise the risk and glaringly visible effects of climate change. We therefore anticipate our future projects to integrate technology, policy and positive action to steer our company towards being not only clean and green, but also secure, in trust for future generations.

Transparency and responsibility assure stakeholders that the company is reliable and responsible. It also shows that management is capable and not afraid to disclose the good and bad, as holding dialogues with stakeholders and shareholders is important.
