Francis Yeoh is Malaysia Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2002

Yeoh with Datuk Seri Abdullah
Kuala Lumpur, 16 January 2003

YTL group managing director, Tan Sri Francis Yeoh was today named Master Entrepreneur of the Year 2002 and Malaysian Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2002 at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards at Putrajaya today. Tan Sri Yeoh will represent Malaysia at the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Program, which will be held in Monte Carlo on 30 May-2 June this year. Previous winners at the World Entrepreneur Program include Michael Dell (Dell Computers), Scott McNealy (Sun Microsystems), Jeff Bezos (Amazon.com), Howard Schultz (Starbucks Coffee), and Jerry Yang (Yahoo)

Malaysia Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who was the guest-of-honour, presented the awards to all the winners in the four categories and the main award. Pentamaster Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd managing director, Chuah Choon Bin was named Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year; AsiaEP.com Sdn Bhd managing director Dr Bernard Tan was named Information & Communications Technology Entrepreneur of the Year; whereas Puan Hazimah binti Zainuddin, managing director of Hyrax Oil Sdn Bhd was the Woman Entrepreneur of the Year.

Yeoh said he had not expected to win, but was proud to be given the opportunity to represent Malaysia. “I share this award with all the entrepreneurs who are present and those who are not present all over the country, who have built this robust and resilient economy,” he said. He thanked the company’s Board of Directors, staff and management for inspiring him and for challenging the status quo to enable him to constantly move forward. He also thanked the shareholders for having the faith in him to lead the company.

Yeoh also thanked the government, “Malaysia is a beautiful country under the leadership of our Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamed and his very able deputy, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. The strength of Malaysia Inc. has brought forth many successful entrepreneurs.

“Most of all, I thank God for His blessings and grace,” Yeoh said. He quipped, “All these awards sometimes tempt me to believe all the good things that have been written about me and to take credit for them but the truth is, God writes the script and is the author of my life, and I’m just a wiggly willing little pencil in His hand.”

Later, at a press conference, Yeoh told the media that he had not expected to win, looking at the number of successful entrepreneurs among his peers. He said he was thrilled to represent Malaysia at Monte Carlo in May and would do his bit to advertise for Malaysia there. He stressed the importance of entrepreneurship in Malaysia in keeping the country going. “See how the entrepreneurs responded to the crisis in 1997,” he added.

When asked for advice for budding entrepreneurs, he said the most important thing is to believe in God, adding that Malaysia is a God-fearing country. With the fear for God, Yeoh said an entrepreneur would be humbled and thus would not be too proud or egotistical. Other aspects of good entrepreneurship such as corporate governance will also come naturally with this fear for God.

Yeoh also said that entrepreneurs ought to be focussed, and not fall into the “wildebeests phenomenon” by going into something that everyone else was doing.
