BusinessWeek's "Stars of Asia 2003"

Yeoh receiving the award from Clinton
Hong Kong, 6 November 2003

Tan Sri Francis Yeoh attends Hong Kong forum honouring the BusinessWeek’s “Stars of Asia 2003”

Former US President Bill Clinton was guest-of-honour at the event and presented the awards to the nominees. The luminaries nominated this year include East Timor president Xanana Gusmao, Philippines Central Bank Governor Rafael Buenaventura, President of the People’s Republic of China Hu Jintao, and Francis Yeoh of YTL.

In the citation, BusinessWeek said this of Yeoh: “When the Asian crisis hit, it was Francis Yeoh’s safe-and-smart business sense that made him stand out. Unlike his peers, he had little dollar-denominated debt.

“So instead of running to Mahathir for a bailout, as many others did, he was able to buy up properties from cash-strapped companies, first in Malaysia and then around the world. Today YTL is one of Malaysia’s strongest and most international companies – and 48-year–old Yeoh one of its most respected business leaders.”

Yeoh said, “I am humbled to be amongst the 25 nominated. It is indeed a rare honour to be considered a little candle in Asia where half of the world’s population resides. I thank our good Lord Jesus for honouring me and I give Him all the credit and the glory.”

Later Yeoh attended a private dinner together with President Clinton, Former President Fidel Ramos of the Philippines, former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke and other prominent Hong Kong and China business leaders.
