Architects who normally work on land recently dived underwater in a corporate social responsibility initiative to save and protect the reefs in Pangkor Laut, Perak.

This due diligence involved Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) and the Malaysian Institute of Architects (MIA) in collaboration with YTL Hotel Group and Reef Check Malaysia (RCM). They came together to raise awareness on the impact of industrialisation and increasing population density on coral reefs around the islands of Malaysia.

Ten advanced divers from the PAM, RCM and YTL descended beneath the waves in this collaborative effort to raise awareness among architects and the local and global community.

The placement of 20 cement blocks weighing approximately 120kg each, provided by YTL Cement, were fabricated especially for this project.

The entire process of placing the concrete blocks into the water, harvesting coral nubbins and gluing them onto the concrete substrates took one day to complete.
